The Ontario Nurses’ Association (ONA), the union representing 53,000 front-line registered nurses and allied health professionals working in Ontario hospitals, long-term care facilities, public health, the community and industry, is mourning the loss of ONA Past President Lois Fairley, RN.

Mrs. Fairley passed away yesterday at age 76. She led ONA in 1977-78, and touched nurses with her compassion and leadership.

“Lois Fairley was a tireless advocate for registered nurses and the nursing profession,” said current ONA President Linda Haslam-Stroud, RN. “She was generous with her time and always willing to share her knowledge and her experience.”

ONA Chief Executive Officer, Lesley Bell, RN, says Mrs. Fairley was passionate about the profession of nursing. “She spent her career at Grace Hospital in Windsor,” noted Bell. “She trained there and she practiced nursing there until she retired in 1993. The people and healthcare professionals in Windsor are better for having her.”

ONA’s members and board of directors send their condolences to Mrs. Fairley’s husband, Harry, her sons Grant, Brian and John, and her five grandchildren.
